Without question, dental implants are an outstanding solution for missing teeth, which may explain why an estimated 5 million implants are placed each year. In addition to offering unparalleled strength and stability, they can also last a lifetime. But when you’re trying to decide on whether implants are right for you, it’s natural to have questions about how the procedure works, whether it’s painful, and whether IV sedation is necessary. In this blog, you’ll get answers to all those questions to help you make the best decision for your needs. Keep reading below to learn more!

What Is the Dental Implant Procedure Like?

One of the most common questions about getting dental implants is, “What can I expect from the procedure?” In particular, patients who feel anxious about dental work often want to know if it’s painful. In terms of discomfort, getting dental implants is often compared to having a tooth extracted. Since you’re numbed beforehand, you feel pressure but not pain.

Here are the basic steps involved:

  • The procedure generally takes 1 to 2 hours per implant. After making sure you’re numb and completely comfortable, a dentist will place the implant (which is a small titanium post) in the jaw.
  • Then they’ll place a “healing cap” over the area to protect it for the next several months while the implant osseointegrates, or fuses, with the surrounding bone.
  • You’ll have relatively mild discomfort in the area for about 4 to 7 days, which is well-managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

Is IV Sedation Necessary?

IV sedation is not necessary for getting dental implants. However, certain patients can benefit from it if they suffer from severe fear or anxiety. With IV sedation, you’ll still be somewhat conscious, but you’ll feel very relaxed and won’t feel any pain. You also won’t remember anything from your procedure.

With that said, there are also other sedation options such as oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide, both of which are great for managing mild to moderate fear or anxiety. If you’re interested in implants and think you could benefit from any type of sedation, start by scheduling a consultation with an implant specialist. After evaluating your needs and making sure implants are right for you, they can recommend the best type of sedation.

But rest assured – regardless of your specific needs, you can get dental implants and enjoy all the benefits they provide, without fear or anxiety.
