A filling is a type of restoration used to replace part of the structure of a tooth that was lost due to decay. A tooth-colored filling is made out of composite resin as opposed to a metal amalgam. Composite resin has several properties that make it an excellent choice for filling cavities, but the one that’s most immediately noticeable is the fact that it can closely mimic the appearance of your tooth enamel. As such, it can be used to make fillings that won’t detract from your smile’s natural, dazzling appearance.

Step one is for us to examine your tooth and determine the extent of the decay. We’ll need to decide whether your tooth could benefit from a filling or if a different treatment may be more appropriate.

If we decide that a filling needs to be placed, we’ll begin by removing the decayed area. Then, after we’ve cleaned the tooth, we’ll apply a weak acid to the enamel, which helps with the bonding process.

The composite resin – which will already be shaded to match the rest of your smile – will be placed. Once it has been hardened, we’ll double-check to see if there are any issues that need to be addressed. For example, if the filling seems to affect the alignment of your bite, adjustments will need to be made.
